How much does a painter and decorator cost in Doncaster? (2026 guide)

Typical day rates and per-room price ranges for Doncaster and South Yorkshire, what pushes a quote up or down, and how to make sure you are comparing like with like.

The short answer

"How much will it cost?" is the first question almost everyone asks, and it is a fair one. The honest answer is that it depends on the size of the room, the condition of the walls and woodwork, and exactly what you want doing. That said, it is useful to have a ballpark figure in your head before you start ringing round, so this guide sets out the typical ranges you are likely to see across Doncaster and the wider South Yorkshire area in 2026.

Guide only. The figures below are broad, typical ranges for the UK and the north of England, gathered to help you budget. They are not D C Decorators' fixed prices and they are not a quote. Every home is different, so the only accurate figure is one based on seeing your rooms. Request a free quote and David will give you a clear, written price.

Day rates vs fixed prices

Most painters and decorators in the region work in one of two ways: a day rate, or a fixed price for the whole job.

Day rates

Across the north of England, a self-employed painter and decorator will commonly charge somewhere in the region of £150 to £250 per day for labour. London and the South East tend to be noticeably higher. Where someone sits in that range depends on their experience, the type of work, and how busy the season is — spring and summer are usually the busiest months for exterior work.

A day rate can make sense for small, open-ended jobs where it is hard to say exactly how long things will take, such as a bit of touching-up across several rooms.

Fixed-price quotes

For most homeowners in Hatfield, Thorne, Armthorpe or anywhere else around Doncaster, a fixed price for the whole job is easier to live with. You know the total before any work starts, and if the job takes a little longer than expected, that is the decorator's problem rather than yours. A good fixed-price quote will clearly list which rooms and surfaces are included, how many coats are planned, and whether paint is part of the price.

Typical price ranges per room

The table below gives rough labour-and-materials ranges for repainting rooms in a typical home, using standard emulsion and gloss or satinwood on woodwork. Treat these as a starting point for budgeting, not a promise.

JobTypical guide rangeNotes
Small bedroom or box room (walls and ceiling)£200 – £400More if woodwork, doors and skirting are included
Double bedroom (walls, ceiling, woodwork)£300 – £550Wardrobes and fitted furniture add cutting-in time
Living room (walls, ceiling, woodwork)£350 – £700Bay windows, coving and picture rails add time
Kitchen£250 – £500Lots of edges around units; stain-blocking may be needed
Bathroom£200 – £400Small but fiddly; moisture-resistant paint recommended
Hallway, stairs and landing£500 – £1,200Height, spindles and access equipment make this a bigger job
Full interior of a 3-bed semi£2,500 – £5,500Depends heavily on condition and how much woodwork is included
Exterior of a typical semi (masonry, fascias, windows)£900 – £3,000+Access, height and surface condition are the big variables
Wallpapering a single feature wall£150 – £400 labourPlus the paper itself, which can vary enormously in price

If you are weighing up paper against paint for that feature wall, our guide to wallpaper vs paint for a feature wall goes through the pros, cons and costs of each.

What affects the price of your quote

Two rooms of exactly the same size can end up at very different prices. These are the main reasons why.

1. Preparation

Preparation is where a great finish is won or lost, and it is often where the time goes. Filling cracks, sanding, caulking gaps around skirting, sealing water stains and repairing blown plaster all add hours. Older properties — the Victorian and Edwardian terraces you find around Doncaster town centre, Bawtry and Rotherham, for example — often need more prep than a newer build.

2. Woodwork and detail

Walls and ceilings are relatively quick to roll. Skirting boards, architraves, doors, window frames, spindles and banisters are all brushwork, and they take far longer per square metre. A room with four doors and a large bay window will cost more than a plain box room of the same size.

3. Colour changes

Going from magnolia to a slightly different neutral might need two coats. Covering a deep red or navy with a pale colour can need a primer or mist coat plus several top coats, which means more paint and more labour.

4. Paint quality

Trade-quality and eco-friendly paints can cost more per tin, but they usually cover better, wash better and last longer. Better coverage can also mean fewer coats, which offsets some of the extra cost.

5. Access and height

High ceilings, stairwells and exterior work at height may need platforms, towers or scaffolding. That adds cost, but it is the safe way to do the job properly. For outside work, the time of year matters too: see our guide to when to paint a house exterior in Yorkshire.

6. How the room is left

If a decorator has to spend the first morning moving furniture, emptying shelves and taking down curtains, that time is part of the job. Our checklist on how to prepare your home before the decorators arrive explains what you can do yourself to save time and money.

How to compare decorating quotes

Getting two or three quotes is sensible, but only if you are comparing like with like. When the quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: exactly which rooms and surfaces are included — walls, ceilings, woodwork, doors, radiators?
  • Preparation: is filling, sanding and caulking mentioned, or just "paint the room"?
  • Number of coats: a cheap quote can sometimes mean one coat where two are needed.
  • Materials: is paint included, and which brand or grade?
  • Protection and tidying: will floors and furniture be covered, and will the room be left clean?
  • Timing and payment: when can they start, how long will it take, and when is payment due?

A very low quote is not always a bargain. If it looks significantly cheaper than the others, ask what has been left out.

Sensible ways to keep costs down

  • Group rooms together. Doing several rooms in one visit is usually better value than booking them separately.
  • Clear the room yourself. Empty shelves, remove pictures and move small furniture before the start date.
  • Decide on colours early. Last-minute changes can mean extra coats or wasted paint. If you are stuck, our guide to choosing colours for a north-facing room may help.
  • Be flexible on dates. Interior work in the quieter months can be easier to schedule.
  • Do not skimp on prep. It is tempting, but a finish that fails early costs more in the long run.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a painter and decorator charge per day in Doncaster?

As a broad guide, self-employed painters and decorators in the north of England commonly charge somewhere around £150 to £250 per day for labour. Rates vary with experience, the type of work and how busy the season is, so always compare like-for-like written quotes.

Is it cheaper to pay a decorator by the day or by the job?

For most homeowners a fixed price for the whole job is easier to budget for, because you know the total up front. Day rates can suit open-ended work or small jobs where the scope is hard to pin down. Either way, make sure the quote states what is and is not included.

Does the price include paint?

It depends on the decorator. Some quotes include materials and some are labour only, with you buying the paint. Check the quote so you are comparing like with like. Trade-quality paint usually covers better and lasts longer, which can save on labour.

How can I get an accurate price for my home?

The only reliable way is for a decorator to see the rooms, check the condition of the surfaces and agree the scope with you. D C Decorators offers free, no-obligation quotes across Doncaster and South Yorkshire. Call 07424 648041 or use the quote form on our website.
